PCSO revives Sunday sweepstakes draws

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) led by Chairperson Margarita P. Juico formally launched the revival of the traditional sweepstakes Sunday with a sold-out event called “Sweepstakes Freedom Draw” (SFD), offering a P5 million top prize and hundreds of other major and minor prizes.

PCSO printed 60,000 booklets for SFD worth P30 million, but only a gross sale of P21,600,000 go to the State charity agency, agents’ commission, two percent printing cost, and documentary tax were deducted.

The three million tickets, P10 each, were all sold out, a good indication of the traditional sweepstakes’ popularity, he said.

The winning numbers for the top three prizes were 246349 (P5 million), 138129 (P2.5 million), and 201316 (P1 million).

This developed as the 6/55 draw tonight is expected to hit P134 million.

Pasay City Rep. Emi Calixto-Rubiano welcomed the sweepstakes’ revival for its potential to give more jobs, even to the handicapped.

“I am sure they will be many who welcomes this development and we should support it,” said Calixto-Rubiano, one of the guests at the SFP draw at the PCSO.

Whoever won in the SFP draw, Juico said they have been blessed by God. “I wish then well and I hope it will help their family and they use the rest of their winnings for good,” said Juico.

It would be recalled that the Philippines had its first sweepstakes during the Spanish period, with a private company in 1833 called Empresa de Reales Loteria Española de Filipinas running it, Carlos M. Castillo, manager of the Draw and Races Department (PCSO-DRD).

He said Filipino national hero Jose Rizal placed a bet even while in prison during his Dapitan exile in Zamboanga Peninsula and won P6,200.

But the sweepstakes had to stopped during the Philippines Revolution, said Castillo.

He said this returned in the 1930s, with the first government draw done in 1932 by the defunct National Charity Sweepstakes with the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation as first beneficiary.
